The HYMS Widening Participation team aims to support people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds throughout the north of England to become doctors. A variety of innovative projects reach out to young people in the region's schools and colleges, raising their aspirations and encouraging them to consider a career in medicine.
The widening participations team will be sponsoring 12 of their summer school students to attend the HYMS National Undergraduate Surgical Conference. During the day we will be providing separate surgical skills (basic suture skills) and careers workshops (how to survive at medical school) for these students. These workshops will be run by the surgical society committee giving the students a chance to ask current medical students questions about what life as a medical student is like.
